Advancing the Science of Innovation Development in Childhood and Adolescence
Blue Blocks Micro Research Institute conducts rigorous longitudinal research on how children develop innovative thinking capacities from birth through age 18. Our work bridges developmental psychology, Montessori pedagogy, and innovation science to answer a fundamental question: How does the capacity for original thought emerge, develop, and flourish across childhood? To generate rigorous, replicable knowledge about how innovative thinking develops in children and adolescents, thereby informing educational practice worldwide and establishing evidence-based frameworks for nurturing innovation capacity from the earliest years.
We exist to fill a critical gap: while institutions like MIT Media Lab and Stanford d.school advance innovation pedagogy for adults and university students, systematic research on innovation development across the full 0-18 developmental span remains sparse. Blue Blocks Micro Research Institute addresses this gap through sustained, ethical, longitudinal inquiry.
Observation Protocols Our trained observers employ systematic observation methods adapted for educational research settings. We utilize structured observation cards with pictorial coding systems to ensure reliability across observers with varying literacy levels, following inter-rater reliability protocols.
Retrospective Coding Our archival data undergoes rigorous retrospective coding using ethnographic methods, converting eight years of observational records, photographs, and field notes into systematically analyzable datasets.
TThe Blue Blocks Longitudinal Study represents one of the most sustained investigations into innovation development across childhood. Initiated in 2017, the study tracks cohorts of children through their educational journeys, documenting the emergence and evolution of innovative thinking capacities. Read more
